It was business as usual for Brigham Young University late
Thursday evening at the Tower Field in Logan, Utah, as BYU cruised to victory
over USU 24-7 in another edition of the classic in-state rivalry.
The Aggies started the game off quick, winning the opening
face off and taking it down for an easy goal to take a 1-0 lead just seconds
into the match. It would end up being the only time that USU would lead in the
entire game.
The Cougars answered quickly tying the game up and
eventually going on a six goal run to take a 6-1 lead in the middle of the
first quarter. The Cougars seized all the momentum and never looked back from
there.
“It just comes down to preparation,” said USU head coach Jon
Atwood. “BYU has had 20 some odd years of success; they have had systems in
place for a long time and that makes them very difficult to beat.”
Atwood also said that they have been trying to match the
same energy, conditioning and overall competitiveness of BYU for the past four
years and it has been paying off for them.
“We scored more goals tonight on BYU than we have over the
past four years. We’re so much better then we have been, so I’m proud of our
guys,” Atwood said.
BYU came into the match ranked 2nd in the Men’s
Collegiate Lacrosse Association with a 9-1 overall record, and they had no
problem pushing their nine game win streak to 10.
The Cougars had solid contributions from Mike Fabrizio who
scored 5 goals in limited action, as well as 4 goals from Jack Fabrizio and 3
more goals from Brandon Royce. The Aggies were led by Michael Christiansen who had a
hat trick and Blade Garlow and Kevin Mann both had 2 goals apiece.
“Honestly, BYU exploited us on defense, we will have to go
back and take a look at the film and address those little things that they took
advantage of and hopefully get better from there,” Atwood said. “We competed
and sometimes teams are just better than you, and that’s fine.”
